Summer Swimming Safety Tips

[Safety Tips brought to you by CP Aquatic Center]
The school year just wrapped up for most kids, which means thoughts are turning to summer days full of fun, play and the pool! Before diving in, take some time to review important safety measures and family rules with your kids when swimming at a public or personal pool. This will help ensure you start the summer on a fun – and safe – foot. Some rules and safety tips to keep in mind include:

  • Ensure the site has proper safety equipment. This includes a first aid kit, flotation devices and life jackets. You might want to consider including a small first aid kit of your own in your swim bag for minor injuries.

  • Never send kids into the pool alone. Make sure they are always swimming with a friend or family member so they can keep an eye on each other in addition to the watchful eye of a responsible adult.

  • Check to see that lifeguards are on duty and paying attention. Remember, when enjoying a personal pool, YOU are the lifeguard on duty!

  • Be sure your children understand the rules of the pool AND any rules you come up with as a family. Those might include asking for permission before going into the water or identifying areas of the pool where they are or are not allowed to swim.

  • Make sure kids know how to swim! It’s never too late to sign up for swim classes – even in June.

If you are interested in getting your child started with swim classes, check out what CP’s Aquatic Center has to offer. We are open to the public and have swim classes for children 6 months to 7 years, all held in a safe and fun atmosphere. We focus on teaching the basic skills needed to become a strong swimmer.
